“May the 4th” Be With You
You know those people who hate made-up holidays? Well, they’re going to have a blast with this one.
Next Friday, May 4 — as any Yoda-worshipping aficionado of The Force already knows — is “Star Wars” day. It’s not a flowers and candy type of holiday, not even a droids and light sabers type of holiday.
No, it’s one of those quirky things that spread like mad on the Internet when someone somewhere realized that May 4 can get really “Star Wars”-ish when you say “May the Fourth be With You.”
How to celebrate? Glad you asked. One group of fun-loving Fresnans has the perfect solution — a “Star Wars” pub crawl. At 10 different bars in the Tower District, people will dress in costume and march from one watering hole to the next to gulp themed drinks.
The man behind it all is Patrick Quiring, whose Fresno Zombie Society has organized Zombie Pub Crawls the past two Halloweens.
“The ‘Star Wars’ thing came kinda natural,” says Quiring. “I was thinking, what am I going to do next? What’s going to draw a crowd? Everybody pretty much loves ‘Star Wars’ — unless you’re a ‘Star Trek’ fan.”
His last Zombie Pub Crawl attracted between 600 and 700 people. And this time, he’s taking things to another level.
This event’s 10 participating bars is three more than his previous event. It includes new spots, such as Tower Sports Club and Pinot Wine Bar, as well as staples such as Livingstone’s, Landmark, Starline Grill and Veni Vidi Vici.
The bars create signature drinks with the “Star Wars” theme. Sequoia Brewing Co., for instance, has Yoda Shooters. Babylon Club, meanwhile, has Blaster Shots and Sith Shooters.
Quiring is also proud of the carnival games and attractions he and his team have developed. There’s a “Light Saber Training Academy” at Landmark and the “Deathstar Trench” at Babylon, which is an adaptation of its shuffle board.
Playing the games gets people raffle tickets, which qualify them for a number of “Star Wars” prizes that Quiring has gathered, such as a toy Millennium Falcon from 1978. He bought it at a yard sale for $3 and it’s worth about $150, he says. (No word on whether he played a Jedi Mind Trick on its previous owner to get that deal.) Quiring will also be dressed in a black Sith robe, going from bar to bar asking people trivia questions for prizes, including action figures, books and Pez dispensers.
“I usually like doing my events on Saturdays,” Quiring says. “But I saw [May 4] was a Friday and said, ‘I’m going to make this work. I can’t pass up May the Fourth be With You.’ ”
Star Wars Pub Crawl: Meet at 7:30 p.m. May 4 in the parking lot behind Livingstone’s, 831 E. Fern Ave. No cost to attend. Details: facebook.com/zombiesociety.
